Film Studies Research Guide
Primary Sources

Primary sources include original works of an author--novels, poems, short stories, autobiographies, diaries, and firsthand reports of observations or research. Many books and journal articles are considered primary sources. In addition, primary source materials may be found in the following archives:

Anthology Film Archives 
Film archive devoted to the study and preservation of independent film.  Extensive library and exhibition schedule.

DEFA Film Archives (University of Massachusetts Amherst)
Films and research materials about East German films and filmmaking from 1946 - present.

George Eastman House
Archive devoted to the study, interpretation, and preservation of historic photography and filmmaking.  Extensive library of film literature.

Harvard Film Archives (Harvard University)
Extensive collection of film prints as well as ephemera like film posters, programs, and publicity.

Origins of American Animation (Library of Congress)
Digital Collection of early American animation at the Library of Congress

Pacific Film Archive (University of California Berkeley)
Archive and study center containing extensive collections in Japanese Film, Soviet-Era Film, and experimental video.

Public Moving Image Archives and Research Centers (Library of Congress)
Lists major film archives in the United States and abroad.

Satyajit Ray Film and Study Collection (University of California Santa Cruz)
Archive dedicated to the preservation and dissemination of the artisitic, cinematic, and literary works of the Bengali film director, Satyajit Ray.

UCLA Film and Television Archive
Vast archive of film prints and video of both large studio films as well as smaller independent productions.  Extensive preservation program.
