Geosciences Research Guide
Data Sets

Data collections or sets make raw statistical data accessible in catalogs or libraries on the Web. These collections contain numeric representations of facts or concepts in some formal organization suitable for communication, interpretation, or processing by researchers. Scientists use data sets frequently to generate new knowledge. Researchers manipulate the raw data with major statistical software packages, such as SPSS and SAS.

Selected data collections in geosciences follow.

General Reference

NIST Reference on Constants, Units, and Uncertainty (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
Latest set of self-consistent values of the basic constants of physics and chemistry recommended by CODATA (Committee on Data for Science and Technology) for international use. Also available the latest conversion factors for energy equivalents.

Periodic Tables (Stanford University Libraries)

Statistical Data and Software Help
(University  of Massachusetts Amherst)
Basic information on available statistical software, where to get it, how to get started using it, workshops, and links to other resources.

ThermoDex: An Index of Selected Thermodynamic & Physical Property Resources (U. of Texas Austin)
Finding aid for thermodynamic and physical properties for chemical compounds and other substances.

Atmosphere and Climate

Global Change Master Directory. Atmosphere Data Sets (NASA)
Comprehensive directory of descriptions of data sets of relevance to global change. Topics include aerosols, air quality, altitude, atmospheric chemistry, electricity, phenomena, pressure, radiation, temperature, and wind/clouds/precipitation.

Satellite Images, Data and Information Websites (NASA)
Links to data sets from U.S. federal agencies.

Hydrology

Global Change Master Directory. Hydrosphere Data Sets (NASA)
Comprehensive directory of descriptions of data sets of relevance to global change. Topics include glaciers/ice sheets, groundwater, snow/ice, surface water, and water quality/water chemistry.

Petrology and Mineralogy

American Mineralogist Crystal Structure Database
All structures published in American Mineralogist, The Canadian Mineralogist, European Journal of Mineralogy and Physics, and Chemistry of Minerals.

ATHENA MINERALOGY
Alphabetical list of minerals with formula, crystal system, pictures, rarity, type locality, etc.

EarthChem
Collaboration of GEOROC, NAVDAT and PetDB, listed below, whose relational databases of geochemical analyses share same basic data schema for ultimate integration.

GEOROC:Geochemistry of Rocks of the Oceans and Continents (Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie in Mainz, Germany)
Global geochemical database containing published chemical and isotopic data as well as extensive "metadata" for rocks, minerals, and melt/fluid inclusions.

NAVDAT: Western North American Volcanic and Intrusive Rock Database
Consortium of geochemical databases of chemical and isotope data of igneous rocks and minerals.

PETDB: Petrological Database of the Ocean Floor
Data for sub-oceanic igneous and metamorphic rocks generated at mid-ocean ridges including back-arc basins, young seamounts, and old oceanic crust.

Mineralogy Database
Data on individual species are linked to the mineral table by crustallography, X-Ray powder diffraction, chemical composition, physical and optical properties, Strunz classification, and mineral specimen images.

National Geophysical Data Center
Geophysical data from the Sun to the Earth and Earth's sea floor and solid earth environment, including Earth observations from space.
