Government Technical and Scientific Reports

The federal government is a prolific producer of scientific and technical reports.  Most are difficult to search and locate. This web page collects in one place the most important guides, databases, and documents for seeking and finding government scientific and technical reports.

AGRICOLA  1970-present (National Agricultural Library)
Citations and abstracts for journal articles, book chapters, conference proceedings, government documents, and theses relating to agriculture and allied disciplines; including plant and animal sciences, forestry, entomology, soil and water resources, agricultural economics, agricultural engineering, agricultural products, alternative farming practices, and food and nutrition.

Online catalog of all federal government documents cataloged by the Government Printing Office (GPO). Available to all users from the Library's public terminals. Only available off campus to members of the University community through their OIT account.

EnergyFiles:OSTI Resources (Energy Science and Technology Virtual Library)
Databases and Web sites containing information and resources pertaining to science and technology of interest to the Department of Energy, with an emphasis on the physical sciences.

EPA Publications Source  (Environmental Protection Agency)
Access to EPA technical and public information.

GPO Access Resources by Topic: Science & Technology  (Government Printing Office) 
Locate current documents on science and technology topics, regulations and legislation related to science and technology, and resources and publications issued by government agencies on science and technology research.

Life Sciences Data Archive (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)

NASA Technical Reports Server  (National Aeronautics and Space Administration)
Search abstract and technical report servers maintained by various NASA centers and programs from 1958 to present.  Includes NACA (National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics) collection from 1915 to 1958.

National Resource Conservation Service (NCRS) Technical Resources
Large list of freely available tools and information to aid various types of research. Categories: air quality, conservation practices, erosion, maps and data resources, natural resource data and analysis, soils, streams, technical references, technical tools and models, water resources, and other biological resources.

National Technical Information Service Product Search
Locate and order publications issued by the NTIS since 1990.

NIST Scientific and Technical Databases  (National Institute of Standards and Technology)
Provides access to many (currently over 80) of the NIST scientific and technical databases, covering a broad range of substances and properties from many different scientific disciplines.

NTRS: NASA Technical Reports Server
Database of abstracts, citations and full-text technical reports. Includes the NACA reports collection.

Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI)
Full text reports and indexes of the Department of Energy's Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) in broad disciplines such as physics, chemistry, materials, biology, engineering energy efficiency, and other related subject areas.

Patent and Trademark Office
Access to all patents from 1790 to the present and trademarks from 1870 to the present.  Find information about patent application, fees, attorneys, search aids and resources.

Science Accelerator  (OSTI)
Searches science, including R&D results, project descriptions, accomplishments, DOE patents, and a virtual library of over 500 scientific and technical databases (
Energyfiles).

Science Inventory  (Environmental Protection Agency)
Searchable database of EPA science activities and scientific/technical work products.  Users can key-word search the database to retrieve metadata records containing brief project descriptions, names to contact for additional information and links to final reports and related topics or records.

Science.gov   (Department of Energy and US Geological Survey)
Gateway to over 50 million pages of authoritative selected science information provided by U.S. government agencies, including research and development results.

Scientific and Technical Information Network (STINET)  (Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC))
DTIC is the central facility for collection and dissemination for DoD scientific and technical information.  STINET is one of the DoDs largest repositories of scientific, research, and engineering information available.  Access to all unclassified, unlimited citations to documents added into Defense Technical Information Center from late December 1974 to present.

TEKTRAN  (Agricultural Research Service)
Summaries of published or soon-to-be-published articles of  research results on food, nutrition, and food safety; crops and livestock; natural resources and sustainable systems; industrial products; and new and emerging technology. Regularly updates and adds summaries of new articles accepted for publication, and removes summaries after five years.

Toxics Release Inventory  (Environmental Protection Agency)
Contains information about more than 650 toxic chemicals that are being used, manufactured, treated, transported, or released into the environment at the state, county, city, and zip code area levels.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)
Includes scientific and technical reports on biology, geography, geology, geospatial information, and water.

Virtual Technical Reports Center  (University of Maryland, University Libraries)
