Microforms
Microforms are books, journals, or other materials that are printed in miniaturized form on plastic or card stock. Those that come in the form of a long roll of transparent plastic are called microfilm, while those that come on small rectangular sheets are called microfiche. White opaque sheets are called microprints and microcards. Microforms allow for long-term, non-print storage of large amounts of information in compressed, but easily accessible format.
Current and retrospective newspapers (particularly regional and international), genealogical records, early English books, family papers, and government documents are just a few of the materials received as microforms.
The Periodicals/Microforms Room on the Main Level of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library houses most microforms as well as the special equipment required to view and print from them. Printouts cost 25 cents per page if paying with cash and 20 cents with a UCard or Guest UCard. Page low-demand microforms with the catalog status "Ask Microforms" from the Periodicals/Microforms Service Desk, which is staffed whenever the Library is open.
While most microforms are on the Main Level of the W.E.B Du Bois Library, other locations include Government Documents (6th floor, W.E.B. Du Bois) and the Integrated Sciences and Engineering Library (Lederle Graduate Research Center, 2nd floor). Here are some examples of microforms and their locations that may be of interest to health sciences students:
