Patents and Trademarks Guide

The W.E.B. Du Bois Library at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst is an official U.S.Patent and Trademark Depository Library.

Always call ahead and make an appointment with the Patents and Trademarks Librarian if you intend to do a lengthy patent search, need to use PubWest, or for reference assistance with patents and trademarks. He instructs classes and schedules individual research consultations upon request in the use of print and online materials related to Patents and Trademarks.

The collection includes the following:

  • Index of Patents, 1876-2000
  • Design Patents, 1843 to present
  • Official Gazette, vol. 3 (1874) to present
  • Plant Patents, 1 (1931) to present
  • Trademarks, all currently registered and pending
  • Utility Patents, 1790 to present

Public Internet terminals are available for online patent searching on Floor 6, Government Documents.

CASSIS, the Classification and Search Support Information System, is available on CD-ROM for patent and trademark searches.
