Population Studies Research Guide
Reference Materials

Reference materials provide background or factual information on a topic. Most reference sources reside in the Reference area on the Main Floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library (one level down from the Entry Floor). Some particularly useful Population Studies reference sources follow.

Atlases

The Penguin Atlas of Diasporas (Ref GN370 .C43 1995)
Maps and descriptions of how various ethnic and racial groups have moved all around the world.

A Twentieth-Century History of United States Population (Ref HB3505 .W75 1996)
State-by-state look at population trends, mostly graphs accompanied by brief essays.

Dictionaries

The Dictionary of Demography (Ref HB849.2 .P7413 1985)
Contains one- to two-paragrah definitions explaining technical jargon for the more general reader.

Dictionary of Demography. Biographies (Ref HB855 .P47 1985)
Two-volume comprehensive set containing brief biographies of leading demographic scholars, including their influences and their bibliographies.

Encyclopedias

Encyclopedia of Global Population and Demographics (Ref HB871 .N43 1999 +)
Two volumes contain a country-by-country look at demographic trends all over the world. Each entry contains mostly graphs and runs about four to five pages.

International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (Ref H41 .I58 2001) (Online )
A classic in the field. Essays of varying length by respected scholars.
