Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics Research Guide
Articles, Journals and Periodicals

Here are some tips for finding articles, journals, and periodicals.

Note that the Five Colleges Catalog gives you results from all the Five Colleges Libraries.  Click on "UMass Amherst" on the grey bar, far right top to confine your search to UMass Amherst Libraries.  Please don't hesitate to ask a Reference Librarian to help you.

Articles on a Topic
To find articles on a specific topic, search one of the Library's many databases relevant to Sciences, Engineering, and Mathematics.  Databases are available to all on computers in the Library; available from off-campus only to UMass students, faculty, staff, and affiliates with an OIT account; enter your OIT username and password when prompted.

Journals on a Topic
To browse for journals and periodicals on a general topic available in the UMass Amherst Library, conduct a search in the Library Catalog called Subject begins with, and add the word "periodicals" to your topic; e.g., mathematics periodicals.  This will take you to a list of Subject Headings; click on the heading you searched for, or browse the list  Here is a link to the results of a search using Subject begins with mathematics periodicals. Note that there must be a subject heading for that topic.

Or use the Subject keyword search in a similar fashion. This way you get a set of titles with those words in their subject headings (any title may have several subject headings).  See the search results for Subject keywords mathematics periodicals to see the difference.  The first (above) gives an alphabetical list of subject headings, each of which has one or more titles under it; this one gives a list of actual titles. The subject headings will give more targeted results, if you have a subject heading for what you are seeking.  Ask for help at the Reference desk if you can't find what you need.

Journals by Title
To search for a specific journal or periodical, use the Library Catalog. When you know the exact title, do a search by Journal title begins with - this search shows you an alphabetical list of journal titles in the catalog, with the one you searched for, if we have it in the Library. Or use Journal title keywords to get all journal titles with those words - e.g., Plant Physiology. A list of journal titles will appear that have both words in the title.

When you find the title you want, click on it, to make sure it's the right journal.  In the individual record, click on CLICK HERE FOR CALL NUMBERS AND AVAILABILITY at the top or bottom of the record.  Note call number and location.

If the location is

UM W.E.B. Du Bois, the title is shelved in the main library, UMass Amherst
UM Science             Lederle Low-rise, UMass Amherst
AC [Science]           Amherst College [Science library]
HC                           Hampshire College
MH                           Mount Holyoke College
SC                           Smith College

All or some journal issues may be located in the Depository, our off-site storage facility.  You can request articles in the Depository, and they will be delivered as an electronic scan to your email inbox.

Journals may also be electronic/online - UMass Amherst students, faculty and staff only have access to UMass Amherst electronic journals, unless they go to the four college library that subscribes to the journal.

E- journals
To locate a specific online journal: From the Library's homepage in the Find tab, click on E-journals.  Enter the title of the journal in the Title search of "Find e-journal". For more information, consult the E-Journals page of this guide.

Printed Indexes
There are many journal indexing and abstracting sources available in the Library's Reference collections. For more information, consult the Reference materials page of this guide.
