Supreme Court Nomination
A decade of stability in the membership of the United States Supreme Court came to a close with the retirement of Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on July 1, 2005 and the death of Chief Justice William Rehnquist on September 1, 2005. President Bush's nomination of John G. Roberts Jr., a judge on the Washington D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, on July 20, 2005 to replace Justice O'Connor, his renomination for Chief Justice on September 5, and the nomination of Samuel A. Alito, Jr. to replace Justice O'Connor on October 31, 2005, ushers in a new era in the legacy of the Supreme Court. This guide provides information related to the Supreme Court judicial nominating process, along with general information about the U.S. Supreme Court, and discussions centered on Judge John G. Roberts Jr. nominations and comfirmation, and the nomination of Samuel Alito, Jr. The guide will be updated frequently as the nomination process moves toward a final confirmation votes in the United States Senate.
