Library Express FAQs
The UMass Amherst Libraries offers a service called Library Express which provides direct delivery of regularly circulating books from the university library collections. There is no fee for this service at this time. All current or retired faculty or staff and current students are eligible for the Library Express service.
How can I use the service?
Locate an item you would like in the Five College Library Catalog, then create a request by logging into your ILL account, selecting "Loan", and filling out title, author, and ISBN fields and making sure to include your current mailing address and an indication that you are requesting Library Express service in the Notes field.
What materials are not eligible for this service?
At this time, we can only deliver regularly circulating materials owned by the University Libraries. We will not deliver media (CDs, DVDs or Microfilm/fiche), normally non-circulating materials such as those designated as "Reference", or materials from Reserve.
Please note: At this time we will not mail books to you that are obtained through Interlibrary Loan (books that belong to other libraries). Books that are obtained through ILL will need to be picked up in person.
Who can use this service?
All current or retired faculty or staff and current students are eligible for the Library Express service. We currently only deliver UMass Amherst books to those who live outside of the Pioneer Valley region. Please contact the ILL office if you live in the Pioneer Valley and require an exception to this policy.
How will I receive my books?
Off campus users will receive delivery via USPS Priority Mail with signature needed for delivery. You will be responsible for returning this item to circulation services by the due date indicated and for ensuring that the material is returned to us safely. We recommend using a traceable method of return to guarantee safe delivery. A mailing label is enclosed for your convenience. We deliver materials to users located outside of the Pioneer Valley.
Placing a request to have a book mailed to your off campus address is just like placing an ILL request with one exception: please be sure to include a note in the "Notes" field of your ILL request that indicates that you want this item mailed to you and provide your mailing address.
Users with local address will have their books retrieved and placed on the Circulation hold shelf for pick-up. We do not offer on-campus delivery at this time.
Can I request articles or copies of book chapters?
Yes, all current or retired faculty and staff and current students can request articles or book chapters through Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery, whether those items are owned by the University Libraries or not. Copies of articles, book chapters or other pages will be delivered to you electronically if possible. Articles exceeding 50 pages will be scanned and delivered at the discretion of the ILL/DD staff. (Workload and technology limitations allowing).
Please let us know if you have any questions or comments about this service.
