===== Tips on the McCormack documents =====

  * You must ask Kirstin about any personal identification numbers: social security numbers, bank accounts, credit cards, etc. Also ask Kirstin about medical information in documents. Those will likely need to be redacted from the scan.
  * if an incoming letter mentions an enclosure but it is not present in the folder, make at note in the abstract: **Enclosure not with letter**.
  * Mention in the abstract any handwritten notes or corrections on documents, except for filing instructions at the tops of documents (General, Personal, name of client).
  * if you find an exact duplicate in the folder, remove the poorer copy and delete the extra file
  * make sure there is a space after period for initials in names (W. E. B. Du Bois - correct, W.E.B. Du Bois - wrong)
  * make sure there is an authority in names: almost always NAF or local
  * reminder to make sure you save every time you do anything in the authority files -- save after every little change so that it updates when others are working at the same time.
  * memorandums written "to XXX file": title these as "Memorandum from Mark H. McCormack to XXX file" and use genre terms "Memorandums" and "Notes"
  * duplicate form letters to many recipients: if you come across a stack of form letters (same content) addressed to many people, catalog those as one record with title "Letter from XXX to multiple recipients". Based on interest of content and amount of names, make a decision on whether to include recipients' names in the abstract. Add genre term "form letters".
  * names/words with accents should be encoded with the accent characters. Use the Oxygen character map (under the Edit menu) to look up the code that properly inserts the accented character. Use the "decimal" (not hexidecimal) code. To make sure it is searchable in Credo, I recommend using the plain text version in the abstract. Example: **Pel&#xe9;** in title and name elements and **Pele** in abstract.
  * do not use double quotes in titles -- the system will screw them up
  * for royal/titled names that are in LOC Name Authority, it's a good idea to check the MARC format to see how LOC has parsed the name elements. Example: "Wellington, Charles Wellsely, Duke of, 1945-" (LOC). Title: "Letter from XXX to Charles Wellsely, Duke of Wellington"

McCormack is survived by four children: Breck (born 1957), Todd (1960), Leslie (1966), and Mary Elizabeth (1997). He is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery just outside of Chicago. Enlisted 28 Dec 1954 and released 27 Sep 1956.
