Bindery Journal Exceptions Workflow
for individuals tasked with reviewing exception requests

  • EAST retention: Review EAST database to see if there is a retention commitment; if so, binding is appropriate
  • Portico: If there is not an EAST retention commitment, check the Portico Title List to see if the title shows a Status of “Preserved”; if Preserved, confirm that we have an online subscription and if not, give the information to the Acquisitions Coordinator to update the subscription to online only, if available; we generally do not bind journals preserved in Portico
  • http://http://eadmin.ebscohost.com/: If the journal is not preserved in Portico, review EBSCOadmin Holdings Management (populated by UMass SFX) to see if the journal is reliably available online and if there are alternate titles that should be checked in EAST and Portico; there will also be an indication for Open Access
  • Ulrichs: If not found in any of the above, check Ulrichs to see if the journal is reliably available online and if there are alternate titles that should be checked in EAST and Portico; there will also be an indication for Open Access
  • Open Access titles: Go online and confirm that you can get to the content
  • After review of all of the above, and in consideration of availability of binding funds, a determination will be made as to whether or not to bind.
