How to deal with dissertation titles that are missing from ScholarWorks

Background on the process:

All dissertations are submitted through Proquest. They are then added to ScholarWorks@ UMass Amherst via a feed that gets delivered to Bepress Digital Commons (the system that runs ScholarWorks) on the 15th of each month. The feed contains links to all of our dissertations (both Open Access and Campus Access) in the Proquest Dissertations and Theses database.

Open access dissertation files are also separately delivered to UMass Amherst Library servers by Proquest. ScholarWorks student workers then upload the Open Access dissertation files to the Open Access Dissertations series on ScholarWorks.

If the title is at least a full year old and is still missing:

Missing Campus Access dissertations

First search the Proquest Dissertations and Theses database for the title to see if it is available there.

If the title is NOT listed on Proquest:

  • First check with the Grad School to see if there's any reason why it might be missing from Proquest.
  • If the Grad School doesn't have any reason for why it could be missing from Proquest, contact ProQuest Dissertation Publishing Support at disspub@proquest.com and ask them to look into it.

If the title IS listed on Proquest:

  • Check to see if there are any restrictions on the title.
  • If there ARE restrictions, it will not show up on ScholarWorks if or until the restriction is lifted.
  • There's no need to check back, because the ScholarWorks system will send an email notification when it becomes available.
  • If there are NO restrictions on the title, email the Bepress Support Department at support@dc.bepress.com and ask them to look into why it isn't listed on ScholarWorks@UMass Amherst.
