Dissertations and Theses Overview

Open Access Dissertations

Open Access Dissertations are available in the Open Access Dissertations Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst. The fulltext is available to all.

Catalog records will have a link to the title in the open access dissertations series on ScholarWorks, and starting with the 2009 titles, a note that says “Open access.”

Open Access Dissertations with Embargoes

Open Access Dissertations are available in the Open Access Dissertations Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst. The fulltext will be available to all once the embargo period has expired. These titles will be marked with a note with the date the dissertation will be available for download. The embargo period will usually be six months after the date the dissertation was submitted.

Catalog records will have a link to the title in the open access dissertations series on ScholarWorks, and starting with the 2009 titles, a note that says “Open access.”

Campus Access Dissertations

Links to campus access dissertations are available in the Dissertations Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst via the Proquest Dissertations and Theses Online Database. The fulltext can only be downloaded from the ScholarWorks site by those using a computer on the UMass Amherst campus.

For off campus access, users must go to the Proquest Dissertations and Theses database via the Libraries' Research Databases Locator. Only those with a valid OIT username and password will be able to access the fulltext.

Print copies of UMass campus access dissertations are available through interlibrary loan to borrowing libraries within the United States.

Catalog records will have a link to the title in the dissertations series on ScholarWorks, and starting with the 2009 titles, a note that says “Access restricted to UMass community.”

Campus Access Dissertations with Embargoes

Links to campus access dissertations with embargoes will NOT be available in the Dissertations Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst until the restrictions are lifted by the Proquest Dissertations and Theses database. Once the restrictions are lifted they will be added to the ScholarWorks dissertations series. Once, the restrictions are lifted, access will be the same as described above for campus access dissertations.

Catalog records will have a link to the title in the dissertations series on ScholarWorks, and starting with the 2009 titles, a note that says “Access restricted to UMass community.”

Open Access Masters Theses

Open Access Masters Theses are available in the Theses Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst. The fulltext is available to all. Open Access Masters Theses will be marked with the document type “Open Access” on ScholarWorks.

Catalog records will have a link to the title in ScholarWorks, and starting with the 2009 titles, a note that says “Open access.”

Open Access Masters Theses with Embargoes

Open Access Masters Theses are available in the Theses Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst. The fulltext will be available to all once the embargo period has expired. These titles will be marked with a note with the date the thesis will be available for download. The embargo period will usually be six months after the date the thesis was submitted. Open Access Masters Theses with embargoes will be marked with the document type “Open Access” on ScholarWorks.

Catalog records will have a link to the title in ScholarWorks and note that says “Open access.”

Campus Access Masters Theses

Campus Access Masters Theses are available in the Theses Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst. The fulltext is available for download to those using a computer on the UMass Amherst campus. For off campus users, there is a note on all Masters theses pages in ScholarWorks that says “Off-campus UMass Amherst users: If this thesis is NOT open access, please use the following link to log into our proxy server and download this thesis.” Users will be able to download the fulltext by logging into the proxy server and entering their OIT user name and password.

Campus access Masters theses can also be lent through interlibrary loan.

Campus Access Masters Theses with Embargoes

Campus Access Masters Theses are available in the Theses Series on ScholarWorks@UMassAmherst. The fulltext will be available to UMass Amherst users once the embargo period has expired. These titles will be marked with a note with the date the thesis will be available for download. The embargo period will usually be six months after the date the thesis was submitted. Once the embargo period has expired access will be the same as described above for campus access theses.

Bound copies of campus access dissertations will be shelved in the Library for circulation and ILL lending. Print copies of dissertations can also be ordered through Proquest.

Masters theses will be available online only through ScholarWorks. Printouts can be made by downloading the thesis from ScholarWorks and printing out the PDF files from your computer.

Obtaining Copies of Campus Access Dissertations and Theses through ILL

Users who would like a copy of a campus access dissertation or thesis should consult with their library's interlibrary loan (ILL) Department. UMass Amherst Libraries ILL policies state that:

We will lend copies of dissertations to other libraries through ILL within the U.S. and Canada. All others must purchase from Proquest.

Masters theses can be loaned if the request is accompanied by written permission of the author. Master theses can be lent overseas.
