RUSH cataloging and processing workflow

If a book, DVD, or CD cannot be cataloged quickly using the FastCat guidelines, please see the updated RUSH processing instructions below.

EXCEPTION: Items that are going on reserve are shelved in call number order and may be on the reserve shelf for up to a year. We will take care of cataloging reserve material as soon as it is received.

The procedures are as follows:

  • Barcode the item. Barcodes are placed in the upper left corner on books and DVDs. Barcodes are placed in the lower left corner on CDs.
  • Scan the barcode into the item record.
  • End processing (e.g. call number label, security targets, stamps, stickers, etc.) will happen after the item is cataloged.
  • In the item record, set the Sublibrary and Collection codes correctly for the material type:

Books

Sublibrary: UMDUB or UMSCI

Collection: UGEN

Material type: BOOK

Item Status: 01

DVDs

Sublibrary: UMDUB

Collection: UMDVD

Material type: VDVD

Item Status: 06

CDs

Sublibrary: UMDUB

Collection: UMMCD

Material type: AUDCD

Item Status: 06

• Change the item process status from PC to blank

• Add a note in the Circ Note field in the item record: “Please give to staff member to bring to RUSH return shelf in the IRM Department upon return.”

• Give Rush books, DVDs, and CDs to Rachel Hobbie

When material is placed on the RUSH return shelf the item status needs to be changed from blank to PC. Susan will check the return shelf everyday to change the item statuses to PC.

*When they are very busy, Susan or the Lindas may also use these RUSH procedures.
